A note about this blog:

I tried to publish photos of my trip as I went. The trip is done but I am still working on sifting through the thousands of photos I took so I can go back and put up photos from almost every day (my trip went until Dec 22). I will also be going back to photos I already posted and adding explanatory text. So, this photo journal will be filling out in the days and weeks to come as I can find time between school. Please come back often to see what's new!

Day 11 - Oct 31

Happy Halloween

Day 10 - Oct 30

JEWELRY ARABIA

Jewelry Arabia  is the largest, most prestigious jewelry exhibition in the entire Middle East. The finest jewelry makers from all over the world come every year to exhibit and sell their work at this multi-day event. I felt out of place there as I was surrounded by people with lots of money buying very expensive jewelry. But I think people must have assumed I had money. Luckily, that made it a little easier for me to eat the many expensive, very fancy, complimentary chocolates. Like eating the samples at Costco but never buying anything.

Day 7 - Oct 27

Great Middle Eastern sky. In hazy humid dusty sky, objects appear further than they are. Like these buildings below for instance, they are not that far away. And the sunset, around 4:30 pm everyday, is something quite different. The sky is this stereotypical Middle Eastern dessert sky you might imagine.

DAY 6 - Oct 26

I went to Qal'at al-Bahrain. It is an important archeological site with remains found dating back to 2,500 BC. Anciently it was the harbor and capital of Dilmun. It has layers upon layers of different civilizations built upon it until finally, in the 16th century A.D. the Portuguese occupied it and built upon and added the fort already on top of thousands of years of other structures. The Portuguese arrived after their explorer, Lodovico Barthema, visited the pearl fisheries in the gulf. They removed a century later by the Persians. Qal'at al-Bahrain was designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

That spot on the right in the sky is showing up on all my photos. It's not the lens. It shows up no matter which lens. It must be on the sensor which I don't dare touch.

The thick humid air makes it look like there's water between here and there.
